Education Secretary Long to speak – Sacramento REALTORS® to award $37,750 in scholarships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 30 2008

State Secretary of Education Dr. David T. Long will be the featured speaker at the Sacramento Association of REALTORS®’ June 3rd general meeting and will assist in distributing SAR’s 2008 scholarship awards to some of Sacramento’s most outstanding high school seniors. The awards presentation will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Association’s Mack Powell Auditorium.

Under the direction of Scholarship Trustee Perry Georgallis, the Association has raised $37,750 this year for 27 scholarships, bringing the total award distribution over the past four years to over $154,000 for 112 exceptional high school graduates and college students.

The scholarship funds have been raised through contributions from area REALTORS® as well as through the sale of bottled water and CFL bulbs in the retail center of the Sacramento Association of REALTORS®. SMUD, Office Depot and the Sacramento Tree Foundation will be recognized for their support of the scholarship effort during the meeting.

The SAR Scholarship Trust was founded 46 years ago to “promote interest in the field of real estate as a career among capable and interested students, and to develop closer relations between the colleges and the real estate profession.” The fund initially provided $100 to $200 scholarships for Sacramento students attending American River Junior College, Sacramento City College, and Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento). It now assists students pursuing real estate, business and a variety of other fields at many different institutions across the United States.

Most of the scholarship recipients this year are high school seniors; four are college freshman. The award ceremony will include individual presentations as well as opportunities for a group photo with Dr. Long.

Dr. David Long was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger as the Secretary of Education in March 2007. In that role, he serves as policy advisor to the Governor on education issues. Dr. Long has more than 40 years of experience in the field of education. He obtained his Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Long was the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools.
