FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 29 2007
Biodiversity, more shade trees, hamburgers, doughnuts and Boy Scouts will all be part of the “Tree Planting Extravaganza” of the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® on Saturday, November 3.
The parking lot of the SAR building at 2003 Howe is currently shaded by some two dozen pistache trees, which are not the best choice for the 100-space lot, Nelson Janes, executive vice-president of the SAR, said.
By working with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, SAR will plant a variety of new, larger canopy trees in between the old pistaches. The new trees will include shantung maples, little leaf lindens, Chinese pistache, crape myrtle and Japanese maples. Using a variety of trees will improve biodiversity, Janes noted.
“We greatly appreciate the help of the Tree Foundation in advising on the best trees for our parking lot, and SMUD’s generosity in donating them through their Sacramento Shade tree partnership,” Janes said. “Having Boy Scouts from local troops do the actual planting as a service project is also a tremendous benefit.”
SAR volunteers will assist the Boy Scouts in planting the trees. The Tree Planting Extravaganza will begin at 9 a.m. and last until about noon. Refreshments will be provided to all volunteers.
