Former Major League Baseball second baseman Steve Sax inspired SAR Members at the September Main Meeting. Sax’s presentation was a reflection of his book, “SHIFT – Change your Mindset and You Change your World,” in which he states that success is a choice based on your thinking, hard work and perseverance.
Sax grew up in a lower middle class family with his parents and four siblings in West Sacramento. He had never been on a plane until he signed with the LA Dodgers. As a boy, he would watch Dodgers/Giants games with his dad and tell him he hated the Dodgers, that “even if they paid me a million dollars, I wouldn’t play for them. A lot changed in a decade. Sax was an LA Dodger for seven years and earned two World Series rings during his time with the team.
From Sax’s experience, success is a matter of a positive mindset, endurance, effort and humility. He recounted his grueling schedule as a minor league player. Since he had no car, Sax walked an hour to practice. Practice was from 9:00am – 12noon; games from 1:00 – 4:00pm, followed by sessions with a defensive coach from 4:00 – 6:00pm. After walking back home, he would eat a bologna sandwich every night and do it all over again the next day.

Gary Dietrich is a widely-respected, nonpartisan broadcast political analyst who spoke at our May Main Meeting on May 3. Here are some of the highlights of his fascinating presentation.
Bin Ladin
According to Gary, “Bin Ladin’s death is the single most important event since the fall of the Berlin wall.” It was a game changer. This event “shows that Obama has the ability to get big things done.” It should reflect well on Obama come election time, however, the economy is the critical factor in how people will vote.
“We’ll see a significant bump in the polls. Bin Ladin was a major boost to America’s psyche. National security is very important to people.”
Presidential Election
“The presidential election next month will be relentless. Obama is trying to raise $1 billion… The natives are restless. People are really engaged and know what is going on.” Part of this is due to the 24/7 news media. Democrats have to defend a huge number of Senate seats as compared to the Republicans.
A bumper sticker Gary read said, “If God had intended for us to vote, He would have given us a candidate.” There is real deep political distrust. Americans ask, “What difference will my vote make?”
“Americans are resilient. This too shall pass. Resist the temptation to go after each other’s throats through the tough times. Together is when we’ve done our best work.”

 1. How long have you been a Member of SAR?
Since 2003 (I have worked in real estate for 18 years.)
2. What did you do before you were in real estate?
I worked in the area of women’s health. I managed several Planned Parenthood centers in Napa & Lake Counties.
3. What do you like best about being in real estate?
a. All the great people I get to work with
b. Regardless of your experience or education, there is always something new to learn.
4. How have you adjusted to changing market conditions in the past couple of years?
As a manager, I’ve focused on getting my agents trained in handling distressed properties and working with them to find effective and budget-friendly ways to build their businesses
5. What have been some of your favorite programs/committees/activities at SAR?
My favorite committees are, of course, Education and Grievance. Two committees I have not served on, but really appreciate, are YPC and CanTree. I admire both for the money they raise for our community and for the fun social events they provide us.
6. As a new SAR Board Member and former Education Committee Chair, why do you devote so much of your time to the Association?
Because it matters. I believe that to be an effective REALTOR® you need to stay current, which means access to good education and information. I also believe it’s very important that we strive to improve our own communities. This takes time, money, networking and being involved. It is up to each of us to do our share.
7. Technology has changed a lot in recent years – how have you kept up-to-date?
I am not exactly cutting-edge. I have no iPad or Smartphone yet. But, I do pay attention to new technology and try to stay reasonably current.
