Chinese lion dancers highlighted the festivities as Patrick Lieuw was installed as the first Asian-American president and the 95th president of the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® on January 10 2012.
Patrick’s theme for 2012, “Focus on Collaboration,” highlights the value he places on the diversity of SAR’s Membership as well as his interest in photography. “This year I’m pulling out my widest angle lens, because I plan for an all-inclusive composition, and that means every single current member of the SAR, and as many new members as we can attract. Each one of us brings his or her own insights and background, and I’m not just talking about differences in gender and ethnicity. Many of us started out in a different career. I, for instance, was an engineer.”
He said, “While others have pointed out that I am the first Asian-American President of the SAR, all I want you to remember, is that we are all one ‘Realtor family’ working together, to better our Association and our clients.”
Patrick, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Gold Natomas, has been a real estate broker and a Member of SAR for 23 years. He has also been a C.A.R. Director and Chair or Vice-Chair of numerous SAR and C.A.R. Committees. He is also involved in the Asian Real Estate Association of America, the Women’s Council of REALTORS® and the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals.

 Dear Member,
I’m excited to begin my term as your 2012 President, but I first want to thank our outgoing C.A.R. President Beth L. Peerce for serving this organization so well over the past year. She helped keep you, the REALTOR®, at the center of the real estate transaction during this challenging time. Thank you Beth for your service to organized real estate!
Like Beth, I also am a second-generation REALTOR®. I followed my mother into the real estate business in 1976 and became a broker a year later. I have served as a C.A.R. director since 1994. I’m going to continue serving the organization this year by helping you get through the tough economic times and be successful in your business.
But I won’t be doing it alone. I’ll be joined by a very capable 2012 Leadership Team comprised of President-Elect Don Faught, Treasurer Chris Kutzkey, and C.A.R. Executive Vice President Joel Singer. I’m excited to serve with this incredible team.
As one of my first duties, I’m pleased to share with you the good news that the FHA loan limit was reinstated last month so that middle-class home buyers have access to affordable home financing. The higher loan limit expired on Oct. 1, 2011, when it was reduced to $625,500, but now has been restored to $729,750 for an additional two years, through Dec. 31, 2013. However, the higher loan limits for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans were not reinstated. C.A.R. and NAR both have long advocated for making higher loan limits permanent.

County Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan will help the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® celebrate the 29th year of CanTree.
Each year, local REALTORS® build “trees” entirely of canned goods to raise funds and awareness for the Salvation Army.
On November 21 and 22, the CanTrees will be constructed at The Secret Garden in Elk Grove and the Sunrise Mall. At the association’s Main Meeting on December 6, Supervisor MacGlashan will join hundreds of area REALTORS® as the check from this year’s fundraising efforts is presented to the Salvation Army.
The Christmas CanTree Project raised $80,000 in 2010. Since 1983, SAR has raised more than $2 million to feed Sacramento’s hungry citizens.
The food donated will be distributed to needy families and individuals through The Salvation Army’s Holiday Food Basket and year-round food assistance programs. More than 165,000 local individuals are expected to benefit from the food contributed through CanTree, according to The Salvation Army. CanTree is a critical factor in successfully feeding thousands of people at Christmas time.
The Christmas CanTree is sponsored by SAR, but many organizations and individuals contribute to its success through donations of food, money, or goods and services.

 1. How long have you been a Member of SAR? I joined SAR in 2006, right after I got my Real Estate salesperson license. Now that I have my own company, Capital West Realty, being a member of SAR is more important than ever for me.

When 34 area students receive college scholarships from the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® on June 7, they will join a group of students reaching back 49 years.
Their scholarships, ranging from $750 to $2500, total $38,250 this year.
“Through all the ups and downs of real estate over the years, Sacramento REALTORS® have always supported higher education through their own contributions,” Perry Georgallis, REALTOR® and chair of the Scholarship Foundation Trustees, said.
The scholarship fund began as a $600 program that provided $100 to $200 scholarships for Sacramento students attending American River Junior College, Sacramento City College, and Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento). Over the years, SAR has expanded the scholarship program to support students in a variety of other fields at many different institutions.
“Education is one of the most important gifts we can give today’s youth. Education benefits not only the student but the entire community. The students who receive a SAR scholarship to attend college may one day be our clients, our co-workers and our community leaders. All these young people are so outstanding, they give us faith in the future,” Georgallis said.

When we talk about SAR as “Your Bridge to Success,” you may think of education and networking.
Have you thought about the importance of community service to your success? Just about every good business person gives something back to their community. And thank heavens we don’t need the money or the clout of a Bill Gates to make a difference.
I hear from some REALTORS® – fortunately, not too many – who have no interest in getting involved at SAR. After all, their fellow REALTORS® are not potential clients and they want to hang out with people who can bring them business. They may be successful, but they are not making their community stronger.
Those of you who do give so much are building strong communities. Whether it’s raising money for the Salvation Army through CanTree or pounding nails for Rebuilding Together, or one of the countless neighborhood projects you do on your own with little recognition, you’re improving the image of REALTORS® while you give back.
Many of you are generous with your time and talent just because it’s the right thing to do. But it does contribute to your success in the long run. Several local elected officials who may not always agree with us see how much REALTORS® do for the community. They don’t have to love us, but being willing to listen is a huge gain. Our clients also see what we do. Giving back builds trust with our clients.

 1. How long have you been a Member of SAR?
Since 2003 (I have worked in real estate for 18 years.)
2. What did you do before you were in real estate?
I worked in the area of women’s health. I managed several Planned Parenthood centers in Napa & Lake Counties.
3. What do you like best about being in real estate?
a. All the great people I get to work with
b. Regardless of your experience or education, there is always something new to learn.
4. How have you adjusted to changing market conditions in the past couple of years?
As a manager, I’ve focused on getting my agents trained in handling distressed properties and working with them to find effective and budget-friendly ways to build their businesses
5. What have been some of your favorite programs/committees/activities at SAR?
My favorite committees are, of course, Education and Grievance. Two committees I have not served on, but really appreciate, are YPC and CanTree. I admire both for the money they raise for our community and for the fun social events they provide us.
6. As a new SAR Board Member and former Education Committee Chair, why do you devote so much of your time to the Association?
Because it matters. I believe that to be an effective REALTOR® you need to stay current, which means access to good education and information. I also believe it’s very important that we strive to improve our own communities. This takes time, money, networking and being involved. It is up to each of us to do our share.
7. Technology has changed a lot in recent years – how have you kept up-to-date?
I am not exactly cutting-edge. I have no iPad or Smartphone yet. But, I do pay attention to new technology and try to stay reasonably current.

2010 Installation
The Sacramento Association of REALTORS® 2010 Board of Directors was officially introduced and sworn in at a gathering of over 200 SAR Members and special guests in a colorful and festive “All Aboard” train-themed setting. Barbara Harsch addressed the theme of her tenure as “All Aboard” referring to the train that is SAR. In her analogy, she explained that volunteers are what make this train move. Barbara proved a great “conductor” for the SAR train this year.
Crab Fest
Over 400 SAR Members and their friends and families attended the 2010 Crabfest held at the Folsom Community Center in February. In addition to the outstanding crab dinner and entertaining emcee Dave Bender, attendees also enjoyed the live music, raffle prizes, silent and live auction items and a $1,000 door prize. All proceeds benefitted the Sacramento Salvation Army. The next Crab Fest is planned for February 5, 2011 – same place, same time. Don’t miss out!
Ethnic Chamber Mixers
Throughout 2010, the SAR Equal Opportunity/Cultural Diversity Committee organized mixers with local ethnic chambers. These mixers, which included the Russian American Media, Asian Pacific Chamber and the Indus Valley American Chamber, served as opportunities for SAR Members to interact with Sacramento’s diverse communities of business professionals.
