Realtors Donate Money, Time to Help Rebuild the Community

A bad economy has not slammed the door on the Sacramento Association of Realtors’ dedication to philanthropy, even as many individual members’ incomes drop.

The association expects to give $58,000 this year to charitable organizations, which doesn’t include volunteer hours or the $44,500 for college scholarships or the $65,000 to the Salvation Army.

SAR ranked No. 14 this year on the Business Journal’s list of largest corporate givers, ranked by 2008 cash contributions to local charities. The association gave $90,322 in cash and $15,291 in in-kind contributions.

SAR gives almost 3 percent of its gross revenue to charitable groups.

Some of the recipients of the association’s giving include Rebuilding Together, WIND Youth Services and The Salvation Army Del Oro Division.

Rebuilding Together at the Fall Work Day, October 3

SAR had a great turnout for Rebuilding Together at the Fall Work Day, October 3.

Rebuilding Together Sacramento (www.rebuildingtogethersacramento.org) is a not-for-profit organization that helps homeowners, particularly low-income seniors, live independently in comfort and safety in their own homes. They accomplish their mission through home repairs and modifications on existing homes.

Volunteer for the Spring Work Day, April 24 2010, and you too can be styling in a lime-green t-shirt.

SAR Has a New Strategic Plan

Carefully considered plans are taking shape for SAR in 2010 and beyond.

SAR volunteers gave two days to the Association for a Strategic Planning retreat in late June facilitated by Gar Anderson, NAR’s Vice President for Leadership Development.

Prior to the retreat, the SAR Staff took a day to review the existing plan, noting that all of its goals had been accomplished. They then made recommendations going forward, which were sent to Anderson for his consideration.

The plan features prioritized goals for the Association, with the purpose of providing the programs and services that will keep Members ahead of their industry.

SAR President Charlene Singley Interviewed by CNN

SAR President Charlene Singley was interviewed by CNN on May 5. A San Francisco reporter was following up on a story in the New York Times that morning suggesting that the Sacramento housing market may have bottomed out. Charlene noted that the median home price in Sacramento fell 57% from August 2005 to February 2009. Sales are up – the total of closed escrows for the first quarter of 2009 was 81% higher than the same period in 2008. First-time buyers and investors are driving the market, she said. For anyone planning to buy, “If they don’t buy in 2009, they’ll be sorry.”

SAR Volunteers Rebuild Together

Early this past Saturday morning, a usually quiet Colonial Heights neighborhood was alive with sounds of pounding hammers, buzzing skillsaws and the excited chatter of people. These were people who, under the guidance of their own hearts, had made the decision that they would volunteer this beautiful April morning. To dedicate one’s time, energy and skills with no pay requires a kind heart and the desire to help. There were definitely some very giving people working on this day.
