Loaves and Fishes

Without passing judgment, and in a spirit of love and hospitality, Loaves and Fishes feeds the hungry and shelters the homeless. They provide an oasis of welcome, safety and cleanliness for homeless men, women and children seeking survival services.

Founded in 1983, they are governed by a Board of Directors selected from Loaves and Fishes and from the community-at-large. These people have demonstrated compassion and concern about the needs of the homeless and the indigent poor.

Every fifth Monday of the month is the dedicated day for SAR and Masters Club Members to volunteer for the preparation or serving shift. Loaves and Fishes serves lunch every day of the year. As the volunteer coordinator, I organize the necessary 20 volunteers for each shift. March 23, 2011 was a milestone, as this organization served a total of six million meals since its inception.

On August 29, 2011, we were really excited to prepare for and serve 900 guests for lunch. This was a very high number of guests but Sharon Gulliford, from Loaves and Fishes, said that the economy is creating a much stronger need for their services. Our next opportunity to volunteer will be October 31st. I invite you to contact me at SHarrold@GoLyon.com to reserve your spot to prepare or serve the lunch. This is a rewarding experience and a great time to meet and work with fellow REALTORS®.

Masters Club Corner-February 2011

SAR Masters Club Logo

We’re off and running into 2011 now with lots of REALTOR® events to look forward to in the coming year. Last year was challenging, but it surely wasn’t because the offerings through SAR were limited. A plethora of classes, seminars and workshops were offered. This year will be no different.

Besides all of the classes offered through SAR, the Masters Club has a number of upcoming events that are sure to help you garner new business. In fact, the Educational Roundtables that were just held were an outstanding success! It was again a sold out event and attended by new as well as seasoned agents. What a bargain to learn all the tips of the “Masters” AND receive a free breakfast to boot. I am a firm believer in gleaning as much information as possible from those who have already done it…..and rarely do you find a successful REALTOR® who isn’t willing to share their knowledge with anyone who asks.

Speaking of things past….the deadline has now passed for submission of Masters Club applications. However, applications for the 2010 production year may still be submitted for review with a $100 late filing fee in addition to the regular $65 Masters Club dues assessment. The $100 late filing fee acts as a gentle but firm motivator to submit your application on time.

Masters Club Annual Luncheon
Mark your calendar for March 11. This is the date for the Masters Club Luncheon to be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel downtown. Invitations will be going out soon. Everyone is invited. Make sure you mail your check as soon as invitations arrive, as space will be limited. It is always a fun and lively event.

Masters Club Spring Mixer
Reserve Thursday, March 31 for our next mixer. The venue has not been determined as of this writing, but invitations will be going out with all pertinent information very soon. The last mixer at the Rail Bridge winery was a rousing success with a silent auction and live music. All of the proceeds from the auction benefitted the SAR Scholarship Fund.

THANKSGIVING… So much to be grateful for. This has been an amazing year at SAR. The talent we have both with the staff and with all of our chairmen and committees has been an inspiration. REALTORS® Rank High in Philanthropy

realtor_philanthropy

The Sacramento Association of REALTORS®’ has become a perennial on the list of the top 25 area companies for corporate philanthropy, as compiled by the Sacramento Business Journal and published each April.

SAR’s position at #15 in 2010, in the midst of mostly for-profit businesses and in the midst of a real estate downturn, is a source of pride and an indicator of how REALTORS® are connected with the community and how they make a difference.

SAR budgets two to three per cent of its gross revenue each year for civic and charitable activities. Most of the other businesses on the Business Journal’s list donate less than one per cent of their revenues toward charitable causes.

CanTree, Masters Club and the Young Professionals Council all raise money independently of the SAR budget and make their own charitable contributions, although all the activities are a reflection of REALTORS®’ generosity. The 2009 Masters Club charities, receiving $3158.88 apiece – the proceeds from the Masters Club annual golf tournament – were Wellspring Women’s and Children’s Center, The GreenHouse and Wind Youth Services. YPC donated $6481.42 from its own fundraising activities. CanTree donated $65,000 to the Salvation Army. In its 27 years of existence, CanTree has raised more than $2 million for the Salvation Army in Sacramento.

REALTOR® participation for Rebuilding Together, Loaves and Fishes, the American River Parkway cleanup and many other activities represent a small portion of what Members give to the community. SAR Members also lead Girl Scout troops, organize neighborhood yard sales and Neighborhood Watch programs and generally endeavor on their own to support their communities.

Masters Club Corner - October 2010

Summer is over, kids are back in school, there’s a bit of a chill in the air these evenings and fall is just around the corner. Fall energizes me and always gets me enthused about contacting all of my past clients and people in my “sphere”– probably more so than at any other time of the year.

If you get energized like I do, I recommend you put these dates in your Blackberry or iPhone: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19 is the Masters Club Annual Breakfast to be held at Del Paso Country Club. We’re very excited this year to have Geoff Petrie of the Sacramento Kings as our keynote speaker. This will definitely be a sold out event, so be sure to make your reservations as soon as invitations go out. This event also highlights the three charities that are the recipients of our golf tournament proceeds. It will be a very nice affair. We hope you will join us.

Then mark your calendar for MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29 for our last prep and serving day of the year at LOAVES AND FISHES. We had so many REALTORS® volunteer this past year, some who had never participated before. Each one of those made a point of telling me that they were really glad they “stepped out of their comfort zone” and joined us. They had no idea how rewarding it would be. I’d like to thank every one of you who helped out. It’s a wonderful time to work side by side with fellow REALTORS® and Affiliates, and also a time to give back to those in need. If you’d like to be a part of our group on the 29th of November, email me and I’ll put you on the list and forward you a map of how to get there. We need about 12-15 for each shift, so we can always use your help (pmartinez@golyon.com).

By the time you read this, our Masters Club Golf Tournament will have just taken place and we will have raised lots of money for the three charities that were the designated recipients. I know the sign-ups were way ahead of the previous year and everyone was enthusiastically looking forward to a great day of golf and fun!

SAR Members raises and give a great deal of money to various community organizations, and I can say from going to events to represent you, that the organizations are doing great good against high odds. I was unacquainted with many of these organizations and am humbled by the work they do.

What are you [...]

Did you know that the Masters Club was originally called the Million Dollar Club?

I learned this news as I was interviewing Marge Reid of Lyon Real Estate. She qualified for this club in 1969, which was the first year she was in real estate. Soon thereafter, the name of the club was changed to the Masters Club because the public mistakenly thought the REALTORS® were earning one million dollars!

Marge has continued in her strong sales and has qualified for Membership every year. She spends 50-60 hours per week working and credits all of her business to her satisfied clients sending her referrals. She also gives back to the community by serving on the public relations committee at UC Davis Medical Center. Three of her family members are also Lyon agents with over 20 years in the business.

Marge has 6 children and 13 grandchildren. Her goal has been to work hard so that she can plan family trips. Her favorite was a recent trip to Disneyland where she surprised everyone as 26 family members boarded a plane to spend Christmas at Disneyland.

In her spare time, she enjoys golfing. For Marge, the real enjoyment of her long career in real estate is solving problems – she thrives on these challenges and says that the more complicated the problems the better. She hasn’t lost her enthusiasm for real estate even in these challenging times.
