2011 marks SAR’s 49th year of awarding scholarships to deserving Sacramento area students. When 34 area students receive college scholarships from the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® on June 7, they will join a group of students reaching back 49 years.
Their scholarships, ranging from $750 to $2500, total $38,250 this year.
“Through all the ups and downs of real estate over the years, Sacramento REALTORS® have always supported higher education through their own contributions,” Perry Georgallis, REALTOR® and chair of the Scholarship Foundation Trustees, said.
The scholarship fund began as a $600 program that provided $100 to $200 scholarships for Sacramento students attending American River Junior College, Sacramento City College, and Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento). Over the years, SAR has expanded the scholarship program to support students in a variety of other fields at many different institutions.
“Education is one of the most important gifts we can give today’s youth. Education benefits not only the student but the entire community. The students who receive a SAR scholarship to attend college may one day be our clients, our co-workers and our community leaders. All these young people are so outstanding, they give us faith in the future,” Georgallis said.

We’re off and running into 2011 now with lots of REALTOR® events to look forward to in the coming year. Last year was challenging, but it surely wasn’t because the offerings through SAR were limited. A plethora of classes, seminars and workshops were offered. This year will be no different.
Besides all of the classes offered through SAR, the Masters Club has a number of upcoming events that are sure to help you garner new business. In fact, the Educational Roundtables that were just held were an outstanding success! It was again a sold out event and attended by new as well as seasoned agents. What a bargain to learn all the tips of the “Masters” AND receive a free breakfast to boot. I am a firm believer in gleaning as much information as possible from those who have already done it…..and rarely do you find a successful REALTOR® who isn’t willing to share their knowledge with anyone who asks.
Speaking of things past….the deadline has now passed for submission of Masters Club applications. However, applications for the 2010 production year may still be submitted for review with a $100 late filing fee in addition to the regular $65 Masters Club dues assessment. The $100 late filing fee acts as a gentle but firm motivator to submit your application on time.
Masters Club Annual Luncheon
Mark your calendar for March 11. This is the date for the Masters Club Luncheon to be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel downtown. Invitations will be going out soon. Everyone is invited. Make sure you mail your check as soon as invitations arrive, as space will be limited. It is always a fun and lively event.
Masters Club Spring Mixer
Reserve Thursday, March 31 for our next mixer. The venue has not been determined as of this writing, but invitations will be going out with all pertinent information very soon. The last mixer at the Rail Bridge winery was a rousing success with a silent auction and live music. All of the proceeds from the auction benefitted the SAR Scholarship Fund.

2010 Installation
The Sacramento Association of REALTORS® 2010 Board of Directors was officially introduced and sworn in at a gathering of over 200 SAR Members and special guests in a colorful and festive “All Aboard” train-themed setting. Barbara Harsch addressed the theme of her tenure as “All Aboard” referring to the train that is SAR. In her analogy, she explained that volunteers are what make this train move. Barbara proved a great “conductor” for the SAR train this year.
Crab Fest
Over 400 SAR Members and their friends and families attended the 2010 Crabfest held at the Folsom Community Center in February. In addition to the outstanding crab dinner and entertaining emcee Dave Bender, attendees also enjoyed the live music, raffle prizes, silent and live auction items and a $1,000 door prize. All proceeds benefitted the Sacramento Salvation Army. The next Crab Fest is planned for February 5, 2011 – same place, same time. Don’t miss out!
Ethnic Chamber Mixers
Throughout 2010, the SAR Equal Opportunity/Cultural Diversity Committee organized mixers with local ethnic chambers. These mixers, which included the Russian American Media, Asian Pacific Chamber and the Indus Valley American Chamber, served as opportunities for SAR Members to interact with Sacramento’s diverse communities of business professionals.

Some 200 Members of both the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® enjoyed a mixer at the SAR office on December 9. The mixer was organized by SAR’s Equal Opportunities Committee.
To help the Hispanic Chamber Members learn more about what SAR has to offer them, volunteers shared information on: Scholarship, CanTree, H.E.L.P. and other down payment assistance programs, Young Professionals Council, Leadership Development, and why they should always use a REALTOR®.

REALTORS® Give $44,000 in Scholarships
Thirty-six area students received $44,000 in college scholarships from the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® on June 2.
Over the past five years, SAR has provided more than $200,000 in scholarships for 148 area high school graduates and college students. The funds have been raised through contributions from area REALTORS® as well as through the sale of bottled water and CFL bulbs in the retail center of the Sacramento Association of REALTORS®.
The SAR Scholarship Trust was founded 48 years ago to “promote interest in the field of real estate…, and to develop closer relations between the colleges and the real estate profession.” The fund initially provided $100 to $200 scholarships for Sacramento students attending American River Junior College, Sacramento City College, and Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento). It now assists students pursuing real estate, business and a variety of other fields at many different institutions across the United States.
State Secretary of Education Dr. Glen Thomas was the featured speaker at the June 2nd membership meeting and assisted in presenting the scholarships.
This year the Scholarship Trustees received 64 applications, a record number, Scholarship Chair Perry Georgallis says. “These scholarships are even more important in these difficult economic times. While we face a difficult market it is important to remember that an investment in a student’s future is an investment in your own future.”
The 2009 recipients:

SAR held its very first Swap Meet on Saturday, April 18th. Our brave sellers showed up bright and early at 8 in the morning to set up their booths. Members rented the spaces to sell everything from home staging items, office furniture, lock boxes, books, kitchen wares, jewelry and a multitude of other wonderful things. Sales were brisk as shoppers scooped up bargains! And while the deals were hot many could argue that the BBQ was even hotter. Hamburgers and hot dogs that would make Gordon Ramsey drool were grilled up by grill masters Tony Vicari and Rico Rivera with the proceeds from the sales going to the SAR Scholarship Fund. SAR hops to make the Swap Meet an annual affair and will be looking to expand it even more by adding more benefits such as adding e-waste removal and shredding to future events… and maybe even more puppies. The SAR Staff would like to give a gigantic thank you to the Members of the YPC who came out and helped with the event!
