Renewal Requirements
If you have kept your address current with the California Department of Real Estate (DRE), you should receive a renewal package three months (90 days) prior to your renewal date. If you do not receive your renewal package, please visit the DRE website at www.dre.ca.gov for the appropriate forms, fees and information. Newest DRE Changes:

  • All correspondence and live presentation courses will require a final examination. For successful completion of a course, you must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the final examination.
  • All students must show a photo id in order receive a completion certificate.
  • To successfully complete a correspondence course, you will be limited to completion of final examinations for a maximum of fifteen credit hours during any one 24-hour period.

    Renewing a Salesperson License
    The following renewal requirements cover the salesperson’s first, second and subsequent four-year license renewals. See real estate schools for a listing of education institutions that offer the courses listed below.

    Real estate salespersons who were licensed prior to 10/1/2007, and are renewing an original license for the first time, must complete five separate three-hour DRE-approved continuing education courses in Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing and Risk Management. Those licensees who were licensed on or after 10/1/2007, and were required to have all three statutory/pre-licenses courses (RE Principles, RE Practice, and one additional course), must complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:
  • Five separate three-hour courses in the following subjects: Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing, and Risk Management;

  • A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and

  • The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.

Second and subsequent four-year license renewal

Your second and subsequent, four-year license renewal requires completion of the following courses for a total of 45 hours of CE credits. Choose one of the following options:

Option 1
  • Agency – 3 hours
  • Fair Housing – 3 hours
  • Trust Fund Handling – 3 hours
  • Ethics – 3 hours
  • Risk Management – 3 hours
  • Consumer Protection – 18 hours
  • Consumer Service or Consumer Protection – 12 hours


Option 2
  • Survey (contains Agency, Ethics, Fair Housing, Trust Fund Handling and Risk Management) – 8 hours
  • Consumer Protection – 18 hours
  • Consumer Service or Consumer Protection – 18 hours

Renewing a Broker License

The following renewal requirements cover the broker's first, second and subsequent four-year license renewals. See real estate schools for a listing of education institutions that offer the courses listed below.

Real estate brokers renewing an original license for the first time
must complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:
  • Five separate three-hour courses in the following subjects: Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing, and Risk Management;
  • A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and
  • The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.

Brokers and Salespersons renewing for the second and subsequent four-year license renewal
For subsequent renewals, all real estate brokers and salespersons must complete 45 clock hours of DRE-approved continuing education consisting of:

  • Either 12 hours of continuing education courses in the following subjects: (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing) OR one six-hour course that covers the four mandatory subjects (Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, and Fair Housing);
  • One three-hour course in Risk Management; and
  • At least 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and
  • The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.
